The Rock House Museum
Home of Wytheville's first resident Doctor, John Haller. This house has
played a significant role in Wytheville's History since it's construction in
1823. The Haller family were pretty cool folks. They used their home to meet the needs of the community.
First as an infirmary and school during the Civil War years ,and as a boarding
house when Wytheville became a popular resort town. The home now
serves as a museum
.
The Dr. Pepper Drug Store This drug store ,once located in Rural Retreat, is said to be the place where the popular soft drink was first created in 1885. But rumor has it that the Dr. Pepper's secret formula was stolen by a his daughter's boyfriend and taken to Waco ,Texas, where it was officially 'launched'. Does anyone know the secret ingredient? ( This site burned down just a few years ago.)
The Millwald Theater
This
classic movie house is still showing movies, since Aug.1928, on Main Street in Wytheville. The
Operator, Richard Herring, says he keeps this place open for the kids. I've
heard more than a few say that's where they went on their first date. Ah, the
smell of popcorn, cologne, and the warm shoulder of
a 'Sweetheart'. "It's A Wonderful Life."
The Shot Tower Located in Foster Falls. This tower was used to make 'shots'. (Ammunition) The iron was melted in the top of the tower and then poured 100 ft through holes that separated the medal into small round pellets which cooled as they hit the kettle of water at the bottom. There was an access tunnel on the river where the 'ammo' was retrieved.
The Rural Retreat Depot
No longer in operation and now up for sale. The Rural Retreat Depot still
provides a blast from the past for all who cruise through this pretty little
spot in Wythe County. You might even catch the sight of a cargo train.
Skeeters of Wytheville I remember going to this 'soda fountain' when I came to visit as a child. It is the home of the world famous hot dog and a great place to go and be treated like family. Edith Bolling Wilson was born upstairs! Yes, she was the first lady, wife of Woodrow. The one on the right is a new print in Color pencil!
Independence Courthouse This beautiful courthouse was built in 1908. I know this isn't Wythe County, but I had so many people mention this courthouse to me that I decided to include it in my collection of prints. What a beautiful drive it is to Independence! I love the name of their newspaper "The Declaration of Independence." Their library, however, is a part of the Wythe County system.
Downtown Wytheville This print features Main Street Wytheville with the focus on Wytheville Office Supply. I remember as a little girl coming to visit my relatives in Wytheville and delighting in the 'Big Pencil'!
